Not Another Diversity Workshop

Tired of the same format for diversity programming? Ready to never hear participants ask if this is “another” diversity workshop? Want to go beyond the rudimentary concepts of diversity and equip participants with the skills and knowledge to cultivate a truly inclusive campus community?

Through a social justice lens, Jamie Piperato (JP) will empowers participants to develop the necessary awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to promote change on both a micro and macro level. Specifically, participants will be guided through a series of activities and knowledge building discussions that will cover concepts such as the cycle of socialization, the cycle of liberation, implicit bias, microaggressions, power and privilege, intent versus impact, equality versus equity, inclusion, etc.

This workshop is customizable and can be adapted for various audiences based on need.

(De)constructing the Binary

Campuses and communities are grappling with issues of understanding and acceptance as it relates to gender identity and sexuality. Often issues arise when dated-concepts of “either-or” are applied to the spectrum of student realities. This either-or mindset is known as a binary.

JP will facilitate a conversation that will help your campus deconstruct this exclusionary framework to better engage all students.

More than 160 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in state legislatures in 2016, each bringing with them concerns about access and civil rights for students and campus stakeholders. Many of these bills have also raised awareness of the lack of education in certain areas about the trans, gender nonconforming, and queer community. In this dynamic and thought-provoking program, Jamie Piperato (JP) will help to create educated dialogue and inspire action around topics of sexual identity, gender identity/expression and sex assigned at birth.

Participants should expect to develop actionable steps to construct a more open and inclusive environment for all and move your community beyond the binary.

Transforming our Work: The Journey to Just & Equitable Campus Communities

The journey to a just and equitable campus is twofold. First, as professionals, we must recognize our own responsibilities as educators to reflect on our own capacity to engage and work towards social justice. Second, as campus communities, we must recognize the steps that are necessary to take to dismantle systems of oppression that exist in higher education.

This program will explore theoretical frameworks for infusing social justice education into our day-to-day practices. By the end of this guided discussion, participants will be equipped with the awareness, knowledge, and action steps to cultivate just and equitable campus communities.

Empowering Voices: The Importance of Talking about Race to Build Community

The Importance of talking about race, Jamie Piperato, Higher Education

Malcolm X once stated, “We cant learn what we don’t know, we cant lead where we won’t go.” During this program, you will be asked to reflect on three questions: (1) why is it difficult to talk about race; (2) how can talking about race build a stronger community; and (3) how can engaging in conversations about race strengthen our commitment to our organizations’ mission and values? By the end of this program, participants should expect to leave with a better understanding about the importance of engaging in conversations about race and how these conversations can build a stronger community. In addition, participants should expect to leave this program with three action steps that they can do moving forward to create more just and inclusive campus environments.
